Welcome to Umeå Core Facility Electron Microscopy (UCEM)
Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy or UCEM is a joint resource for research and higher education in electron microscopy techniques. The Core Facility is a USER facility for structural and chemical characterization of materials at micro- and nanometer length scales. The aims of the Core Facility are (1) providing high-quality service and technical in scanning and transmission electron microscopy, (2) conducting basic and practical courses, workshops and training on electron microscopy, and (3) assisting in cross-disciplinary research activities on the development and applications of advanced methodologies in electron microscopy and microanalysis.
The major financial contributions to the Core Facility are Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), Chemical Biological Centre (KBC), Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science and Technology, Västerbotten County Council, Kempe Foundation and Berzelius Centre for Forest Biotechnology.

TEM sample preparation course II Practical course at UCEM, 25 - 29 January 2016 Registration: CLOSED
Course II covers chemical fixation, high pressure freezing, freeze substitution and plastic embedding methods including practice on ultra-microtome sectioning, immunogold labeling, post staining and TEM imaging
Pre-requisite criterion: EM Basic/Practical course or existing TEM user. We will run this training course for 4-8 interested applicants. We will preferentially select students who like to work with their own sample, and work with EM sample preparation and EM imaging in their future project.
First, have a look at the methods that will be covered, since this course focus only on these methods. Secondary, make sure you have time to participate the entire course week, full days. Please write a short project description, a motivation and what sample you would like to prepare during the course. Please submit an application by January 12th. If we have to many applications we will make a selection depending on your motivation and how your project fits the course aims.
Since the fixation and plastic embedding takes time, you need to bring your sample to Agnieszka Monday 18th January, and a new sample on the first course day, January 25th. Students attending all theoretical and practical parts of the course, will receive a certificate for 1,5 ECTS.

Basic Course in TEM and SEM - 1 ECTS 2-4 December 2015 This course covers fundamental theory and operational principles as well as specimen preparation techniques for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Registration: CLOSED.
The aim of this course is to give general and basic introduction to PhD students and postdocs, who would like to work with EM methods in their projects. We accept participants from all research departments and universities and have no specific focus on research topics. We will not have time to work on participants' project samples during the course. The course includes lectures on day 1, laboratory demonstrations on day 2 and electron microscopy operation demonstrations on day 3. The TEM laboratory session will explain how you prepare EM grids, negative staining of proteins and how plastic embedded samples are sectioned with an ultramicrotome. The SEM session covers both biological and materials science samples. Please, only apply if you have time to participate for 3-full day.

School Outreach Program - EM Lecture & SEM Demonstration - 12 March 2015 Around 20 high school students with their school teacher from Skellefteå attended the program (EM lecture given by Linda Sandblad and SEM demonstration by Nikki Lee). This is an outreach activity organized by KBC (person-in-charge: Tobias Sparrman) and Umeå University.
Basic Course in TEM and SEM - 1 ECTS 22-24 April 2015 EM Basic Course covers fundamental theory and operational principles as well as specimen preparation techniques for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This course will include both lectures and laboratory demonstrations. The TEM laboratory session will focus only on biological specimens while the SEM laboratory session will cover both biological and materials science samples.
