At the facility, large mass spectra libraries have been developed for both chemical standards and spectra from different samples. The libraries (GC/MS; LC/MS; LC/MS-MS) are continuously updated and will be publicly available in the future. So far, more than 65 000 samples have been analyzed in the facility, ranging from plant to plasma and cerebrospinal fluid samples. The facility has also developed targeted approaches for analyzing specific compounds like amines and amino acids, lipids and plant hormones.

Swedish Metabolomics Centre is part of interdisciplinary Chemical Biological Research Centre (KBC) and has close collaboration with chemometrics at the Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC) in multivariate statistical analysis of metabolomics data and design of experiments (DOE) and strategies in planning of metabolomics experiments.

Metabolomics has become widely used as a diagnostic tool and identification of specific disease markers for cancer, neurology and diabetes and this has generated a number of interdisciplinary research collaborations. A new and very promising area is Infection Metabolomics for infectious disease diagnostics and rapid identification of causative bacteria and antibiotic resistance traits.

This infrastructure are funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Erling-Perssons Family Foundation, Kempe foundations, the UPSC Berzelii Centre (Vinnova/VR), The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University (UmU).
