Welcome to the Umeå Cell Biology Symposium 2018!

It is our pleasure to invite you to the first interdisciplinary Umeå Cell Biology Symposium! Our ambition is to bring together scientists (PhD students, postdocs, research engineers, PIs) that work in different research areas in Umeå but share a common interest in cell biology. The aim of the meeting is to exchange up-to-date knowledge and ideas on fundamental and applied aspects of cell biology as well as novel approaches and techniques that are useful for basic research.

The symposium will take place on the 30th and 31st of May at KBC, Umeå. We will have scientific sessions with talks from PhD students, postdocs and research engineers as well as poster sessions. The sessions will be organised according to research areas or methods depending on the abstracts and topic interests submitted during the registration process. Hence, we ask that you pay particular attention to this when registering.

The key sessions of the meeting will be two round-table discussions where topics like sharing, developing and coordinating infrastructures and resources, research collaborations, needs for future research training courses and joint research applications will be openly discussed. We hope to stimulate the networking within the Umeå Cell Biology community and to identify new areas of interaction.

As special highlight, we have planned a ‘cell biology image competition’ as part of the symposium. If you wish to participate in this, please submit your images  together with your registration. The participants at the meeting will vote for the best image during the symposium. The winners will be announced during lunch on the second day of the meeting and could win a token prize. The following criteria need to be fulfilled in order for your image to be included in the competition:

  • The image should either be taken by you, or be an image of your sample if taken by someone else. Please submit the name(s) of the author(s).
  • Make sure that you have the copyrights for your image (it is best not to submit an image that you plan to use in a publication. If you wish to submit an image that has already been published, make sure you check permission with the copyright holder).
  • Please submit a short description of your image: What is displayed on the image (e.g. type of cell/cell compartment, organism)? What type of technique was used to generate the image (i.e. preparation of the sample, type of microscope, imaging technique, staining or contrast method)?
  • The image should have a resolution of 300dpi and be ca. one A4 page in size or 3500/2200 pixels in width/height. If possible, please submit the original image.
